I've been suffering lately from a lack of internet access. Our internet at home has been down due to confusion over a shift in telephone companies. This has made me keenly aware of how much I actually incorporate the world wide web into my daily life. I am having to find alternate sources of weather information to even dress in the morning, and my ability to access news sources has been frustratingly limited. A fact that has been amplified by the current CBC lockout.
My usual morning routine included only two absolutely necessary elements: coffee and CBC radio one while I putter around and get ready in the morning. I still have the coffee (dark and black), but I am missing those friendly and credible voices that circulate in my head giving me local, national and international news.
Now, as I understand it, the CBC lockout centres around one thing: management wants to increase the number of contract workers and decrease the number of full time employees. This is supposed to save us Canadians money. Well, this Canadian says spend the money. I believe Canada needs the CBC. It is our metaphorical railroad. It connects Canada coast to coast, informing us of what is going on across this frickin' huge land of ours. It provides us with in depth analysis of current events from a Canadian perspective, and I believe an investment in good journalism requires an investment in good people. People are not an expendable commodity. Why is this so hard to understand?
I'd issue a call to arms, but not that many people read this lil' blog o' mine. So I will have to content myself with having called the Prime Minister's office as well as the occasional rant on-line or in person. How very Canadian of me, eh!?
